DescriptionAt several places in this field fighting was especially fierce. One such area was this sunken road, where many died, and has born the name ever since. Bloodiest Battle: At Antietam in Washington County was fought the bloodiest day of the civil War. The battle took place on Septmber 17, 1862. Federal losses were 12,410 and Confederatelosses about 10,700 in killed or wounded. One federal corp marched into a pocket of 10 confederate brigades and lost 2000 men in 20 minutes. Northerners call it the Battle of Antieta, Sounterners call it the Battle of Sharpsburg. The Confederates withdrew.
