DescriptionTongers work the oyster beds of the James River, said to be one of the finest beds in the world The spat, the newly set oyster, grows better here than any other place, but for unknown reasons, the oysters never attain much size. They are sold as seed and transpalned to other waters where they grow large and fat. Virginia is the world's largest oyster producer. Here, tongers are anchored at Deep Creek.
