TitleMount Clare Station
Date(c. 1945)
DescriptionThis is the first railroad passenger and freight station to be erected in the United States. It was built on land deeded to the railroad by Charles Carroll of Carrollton. In May 1830, the first trip over the new roadbed was made to Ellicott’s Mills, using a horse to draw the train. The first American-built steam locomotive, Tom Thumb, was built by Peter Cooper in a shop near the station. On May 24, 1844 the world’s first official telegraph message was received at the station from Samuel F. B. Morse in Washington. The roundhouse behind it is one of the largest and most interesting in existence.
