DescriptionThe inspiring scene of six tired men raising the flag on Mount Suribachi in 1945 is commemorated by the Marine Corps War Memorial. It honors the men who fought on Iwo Jima in World War II and the Marines who preceded them. The memorial, dedicated in 1954, is said to be the largest cast bronze statue in the world. It borders Arlington National Cemetery and is one of the most visited and photographed shrines in the Washington area.
